Robin, you said: "...peasants who left their farms in the countryside for the promise of a better life in the cities." But that's not why they left. They left because they were evicted by The Enclosures, exiled from the common land they had possessed for centuries. Their only resort was to suffer and die in the city factories (either that, or suffer in the Work House, which was designed to be even worse!).
