"[Alfred the Great's] unique importance in the history of English letters comes from his conviction that a life without knowledge or reflection was unworthy of respect..."
Sir Frank Stenton
I've found that many atheists reject God out of a hurt. I've talked to those who can pinpoint a time and place (usually a loss) where they determined "there is no God". If my neighbor or sibling hurts me; I have the option of never speaking to them again. But what if God "lets me down"? then what? I spend my life denying him and railing against any belief in him. I also believe many of our churches do God a disservice with our inerrancy and misunderstanding as well as mispplication of scripture.(See Larry Osborne's 10 Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe). I often hear: "God won't put any more on you than you can bear". Of course he will. The LORD told us to come to him with our burdens. Why would he offer to help with our burdens if we could carry them ourselves? He told us to bear one another's burdens. Again why? Also, God promised to visit wrath on Israel (and the world) for disobedience. Who can bear God's wrath?
